| | Reviewed by: parcours, Scratch Golfer Summary: All in all, Donegal Highlands offers great value. For a cheap public course, conditions are excellent, and the design of the course is entertaining, excepting one hole. The front nine is wide open, the back a bit tighter. Par 5s are all reachable by mid to long hitters (I drive 260 avg and can reach from the back tees), and most of the 4s leave short irons. The greens are humped all over, though, so putting levels the field a good bit. If in doubt, hit it hard inside the cup.
Worst part: number 17. The drive is ridiculous from any tee, worst of all from the back tees. You're forced to hit a massive slice to get the ball in play. Trees block any shot starting right, so a draw isn't an option. And the only straight shot available would be a 150 yard lay-up to the ten yards of fairway not blocked by the poor angle, leaving 200 plus into the green. Only play is to aim at the Turnpike and cut the ball as hard as possible. An overcut, though, will end up in a meandering stream. Like I said, it's the worst part of the course and, really, the only black eye you'll find. Customer Service: Excellent in the shop; varying in the bar
