Reviewed by: golferbob37, Shoots in the 80s Summary: This review is for the Creek Course at Moose Run, rated by Golf Digest as the second best in the state for 2006/7. Played here 6-28-07, and it was great!! Terrific design, with lots of challenges, some very clear, others a bit more subtle until you get nailed. Relatively new course, carved out of the woods, with very few holes within sight of each other. Lots of elevation change, but still walkable. Beware, though: there are some serious distances between green and tee, especially on the back. Some very well-designed holes, #1 and #2 are both pretty good starters, but #9 is memorable. It's a shortish, downhill, par 5 with two lateral hazards: make sure you walk/drive up and look at it before you hit your drive or second shot: I hit 3 wood from the white tees, and was only short of the first hazard by about ten yards, then hit gap wedge 100 yards to be short of the next hazard (Ship Creek), then another gap wedge downhill to the very shallow green. This is definitely not a grip-n-rip hole. As in most Alaskan courses, not much room for error off the fsirway, as the forest closes in quickly. This course has a few holes with split fairways, so there's a risk/reward situation to consider there. Lots of great scenery, of course, and the wildlife may favor you with an appearance, especially early and very late. Conditions today: tee boxes were generally OK, though some were looking kind of worn: fairways were generally OK, but very thin in spots: first cut of rough was decent, but not nearly wide enough for me(!): bunkers were OK, but surprisingly rocky, including some pretty chucky ones: greens are large, and today were pretty fast by local standards, but also bumpy, so expect a lot of air time on your putts. Course gets a lot of play, as it is regarded by the locals as they best in the area (and I agree), so call ahead before making the trip out there. Easy to find, only 1/2 mile off the Glenn Highway, and even though it's an Army course, there is no gate to go through. I highly recommend it! Customer Service: Pro shop staff was a couple of very young ladies (teens, actually), and although they were efficient, they weren't all that warm and welcoming. Starter was very personable, and made one feel an honored guest. Marshall was OK, and the lady in the halfway house (course does not have a classic "turn", it just keeps going) was very nice and positive. Restaurant staff was friendly and helpful. Similar Courses Played: Eagleglen (Elmendorf AFB), Achorage (O'Malley's), Settler's Bay. Of these three, the Creek Course is best.
