| | Reviewed by: scratch999, Scratch Golfer Summary: After recently but reluctantly playing here because a local relative wanted to, I think I can explain the dramatically differing reviews found here.
My theory is this ... one man's floor is another's ceiling. The younger players or perhaps less brainwashed that they can only afford a muni or county course realize that for 18 bucks they can book an online tee time at Olivas links ( non twilight ). That they can book an online tee time at Robinson Ranch ( non twilight ) for 40. That they can play Lost Canyons Shadow course for around 25 or Sky Course for around 32 ( non twilight ) and the list goes on & on for semi private courses. All while letting you enjoy a REAL golf course with superior service & amenities. Not to mention edible food, great clubhouses, pro-shops and good looking female bartenders instead of the geriatric crack hags found elsewhere. You can feel the beaten down blue collar institutionalized vibe here that is palpable at any cluster f*** muni course found throughout the southland. Oh and it must be so wonderful to practice and warm up hitting off of plastic mats- yes that's going to help your swing. The city sells a yearly or so contract to whomever / whatever company will run the property the cheapest so that the city or whoever was bribed gets the best deal. In this case it's American Golf who manages the course and all they care about is how little they can do and still keep people from complaining. What the poorly educated don't understand is that they make a higher profit by keeping green fees low ( keeps complaining down ) and packing in 5-somes. The balance works to their advantage by paying less greenskeeper employee insurance, equipment costs, using less course supplies ( chemicals etc. ) , less employees mean more un-repaired divots, un-repaired ( in time ) ball marks and the list of lack luster care goes on & on affecting the experience. But hey lots of people think eating at the Olive Garden or Hometown Buffet is a great experience too. Customer Service: stale Similar Courses Played: na

Nothing but fivesomes and nine, count them, nine carts lined up on the #1 tee box. If your doctor tells you you only have six months to live, you may want to play elsewhere. No thanks. | | Reviewed by: LHANN, Shoots in the 80s Summary: Great course! I love to see reviews like the one written by NumNuts ecareaga. Hopefully reviews like his will keep people away. It is hard to get a tee time. But for good reason. This is the best public course in SoCal. NumNuts doesn't even know that this is a county course, not a city course. Customer Service: Great customer service. Courteous and helpful. Similar Courses Played: Wilson, Brookside, Black Gold, City of Industry, Eagle Glen, Sandpiper, La Quinta

| | Reviewed by: ecareaga, Shoots in the 80s Summary: I live near Los Verde and have to be very desperate for a round of golf to want to play here. Even if you wanted to, making a reservation at a decent time or desirable day is next to impossible. For reasons unknown, people call in or wait in line to book times starting at 5:00AM. Considering this course is smack dab in the heart of the most expensive real estate in Los Angeles, this course is the most poorly maintained and overplayed. It’s sad, but the City of Los Angeles has not invested a dime into this course in 40 years, and it shows. Although it boasts cheap rates, you also get cheap golf. The fairways are in overall poor condition and none of the grass is consistent. In addition, the clientele have never heard of the repair a divot or use a rake once out of the bunker rule. If you have six hours to kill, then this is your place. No matter how high the handicap, everyone insists on playing from the blues, everyone. If the City of LA was smart, they should mow down this place, redesign the course and build a new club house. The location would make it a premiere facility for Los Angeles. Unfortunately the “blue-hairs” would go nuts about loosing their $15.00 golf. Customer Service: average Similar Courses Played: Black Gold, Coyote Hills, San Dimas Cyn

| | Reviewed by: Emory, Shoots in the 100s Summary: I played on consecutive days in April. I find my opinions of this course very similar to those of the prior reviews.
First of all, it really is a pretty course. I was vacationing in Redondo Beach for a week, and looked into public courses. I went to Victoria (in Carson) the day before I went to Los Verdes, and there is very little atmosphere (unless you like the views of a busy interstate freeway.) But the Palos Verdes area is very picturesque, and the course takes advantage of that. The best view is on hole #15 - it's a blind hole, and after your tee shot, you head on up the fairway and once you go over the rise, you are greeted by a green that backs up to the ocean. It's a scene straight out of a postcard - and in fact, I brought my camera the next day to get my picture with that in the background.
Second, it is a great value. I paid $21.50 for my round the second day, and $15.50 the first day (because I could only get a tee time at 1:20, and I found out when I paid that it was a twilight rate.)
Third, it will take 5-6 hours per round. The first day, it was a foursome, and we watched the sun set at 6:15 on the 18th fairway. The second day, we were part of a fivesome, and took six hours to finish. Don't expect a quick round - but this is golf, not work, so what's the rush?
Fourth - given the scenery and the good value, it's hard to get a tee time. I called at 6 AM and when I finally got through, the earliest tee time was 11:48 (although 6:15 was still available - I passed.) Similar Courses Played: Driving range
