I've only been playing golf for a couple years now, I started out playing at some of the cheaper courses in the area (Baton Rouge)some of them (LSU, Webb) are pretty nice for the price others (City Park) are horrible. I played Santa Maria for the first time a few weeks ago, and I have to say as of today, this is the nicest course I've played so far, I know its not the greatest golf course in the world, but far better than any other I've played at. Here, the fairways aren't as hard as a rock [like City park and Webb (on some days)] you can take a divot with no problem and don't have to worry about breaking your clubs. Also, the course is challenging, there are many doglegs, hazards, and the greens are very challenging. The best part about this course is the GPS in the carts. It is far easier to play the course well when you have trust worthy distances to work with. If you are an average golfer looking for a great course, or if you are a scratch golfer looking for a semi challenging course that isn't $100+, I highly recommend you play this course. Great course, it was worth the drive from Lafayette to play. The lay out of the course was great, fairways wide, and greens nice and big. Customer Service:
Since I never played the course, I ask to be paired up with someone who did. They paired us up with two others who never played the course.

This RTJ layout is a nice one. The course is set up very nicely, not a back and forth, parallel fairway setup. There are 4 sets of tees, so every level of golfer can have fun. The greens large, especially when compared to most greens in the area. Many have multiple tiers, and are all undulating, which make it a challenge to putt.
The fairways are generally large, with no real tight driving holes. Length is helpful here. A good short game is a must.
Great par 5 finishing hole. Dogleg right, with a huge lake down the entire right side. A good drive gives you a chance to go for the green, but you must carry the lake the entire way. Nice risk/reward hole.

This course is public jewel of Baton Rouge. The Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course was built for a private club which went bankrupt and sold the course to BREC, the public park service. Although the course is perhaps not maintained to perfection always, the layout is beautiful, challenging and fun. The long 18 holes stretch around a gorgeous residential area just east of Baton Rouge. Although significantly more expensive than other BREC courses in the area, the value is great. Green Fess run about $20, arguably the cheapest RTJ, Sr. course in the world! Walking this course is not recommended in the summer. It's very long and the cart fees are cheap enough to warrant not passing out after 6 holes. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't played this course and you live in Baton Rouge, get out there immedeatley. Similar Courses Played:
